Riding Squamish MTB Trails for the First Time

In short: The Squamish MTB trails in British Columbia, Canada, are known for steep slabs, technical roots and a demanding trail network. On a first ride back after some time away, the first corners feel rusty, but muscle memory returns quickly, and several sections rebuilt by the local trail crews now ride smoother and more sustainably without losing their technical character.

There's something special about returning to the Squamish MTB trails after spending some time away. The mountains haven't changed, but somehow they always manage to feel bigger, steeper and faster than you remember.

This ride marked my first proper session back on Squamish's terrain. From the very first pedal strokes, I remembered why this place has earned its reputation as one of the world's premier mountain biking destinations.

Getting comfortable again on the Squamish trails

Honestly, the first few corners felt rusty.

Squamish is known for its steep slabs, technical roots and demanding trail network. Even if you've ridden here before, it takes a little time to reconnect with the terrain. Your braking points feel different, your body position needs a reminder, and your confidence has to catch up with your ambitions.

That feeling doesn't last long, though.

With every descent, the bike started to disappear beneath me, and muscle memory slowly took over. Suddenly, the riding felt natural again: trusting the tires, carrying more speed through corners and enjoying every feature the trails had to offer.

New sections from the Squamish trail crews

One of the highlights of this ride was seeing the incredible work done by the local trail crews. Several sections are new, making the trails smoother, more sustainable and even more fun to ride.

Squamish has always been famous for its passionate trail-building community, and every visit is a reminder of how much effort goes into maintaining such an extensive network. The updated sections flow beautifully while still preserving the technical character that makes these trails so unique.

Why Squamish MTB trails never get old

Every ride in Squamish feels like a reminder of why riders travel from around the world to experience these trails.

The combination of world-class trail building, incredible scenery and endless variety means there's always something new to discover. Whether it's your first visit or your hundredth, the Squamish MTB trails always find a way to challenge you, and reward you.

For me, this ride wasn't about setting personal records or riding the hardest lines. It was simply about getting back on the bike, finding that familiar rhythm and enjoying one of the best riding destinations on the planet.

If you're heading there, Corsa Cycles, a Squamish bike shop and workshop, is on our map of bike parks and MTB spots. For more Squamish classics, read our ride on Treasure Trail and the Squamish slabs.
