MONGOLIA · ORKHON VALLEY (ÖVÖRKHANGAI)
Once in a lifetime: 10 days riding Mongolia's wild steppes
MTB expedition through the Orkhon Valley: endless steppes, lava fields and camps under Mongolia's open sky.
- 10 days · 9 nights
- Level intermediate / advanced · up to 2600 m
- Group 1 to 20 people
Overview
This trip is designed as one of the most immersive MTB experiences in Asia: riding through remote areas and wild landscapes, with a deep cultural connection in the heart of Mongolia. From Ulaanbaatar, the adventure quickly leaves the city behind and heads into the protected Orkhon Valley, where traditional gers, open horizons and endless trails set the tone for the trip.
The days are spent exploring Orkhon National Park and the vast steppes of Övörkhangai, riding everything from flowing descents to more technical terrain, with shuttles available to make the most of the downhills. The multi-day stages follow rivers, cross volcanic plateaus and climb towards sacred sites such as Tövkhön Monastery, with wild camping beside rivers and streams that puts you right inside Mongolia's purest landscapes.
Back at the Genghis Khan Retreat, riding is combined with authentic nomadic experiences and time to unwind: horse riding, archery, kayaking, yoga or simply recharging after long days. A carefully designed loop, remote and adventurous, deeply connected to the land and its culture, before heading back to Ulaanbaatar.
Your accommodation
One night at the 4* Ulaanbaatar Hotel, which has been welcoming travellers since 1961 and has hosted heads of state.
Five nights at the Genghis Khan Retreat, an exclusive adventure camp in Orkhon Valley National Park.
Three nights of camping included.
What riding in the Orkhon Valley is like
The terrain is wide open and natural: open steppes, volcanic landscapes, river valleys and remote singletrack with no waymarked trails. You ride mostly on hardpack, grass and rocky sections, combining flowing descents with long, sustained climbs. Some days have shuttle support, but the experience remains a pure mountain adventure.
This trip is for riders with a medium to high fitness level. Daily stages range from 60 to 70 km, with many hours in the saddle. You need to be comfortable on natural terrain and in remote environments.
Much more than riding
In partnership with the Genghis Khan Retreat, the trip combines remote adventure with comfort and nomadic hospitality. Between riding days you can try traditional archery, kayaking, horse riding, hiking and climbing, or simply relax with a massage.
It runs only once a year, in summer, making it a rare and exclusive trip.
